Encrypted messaging, voice and video calls, and sharing your live location in a conversation
Chat covers one-to-one and group conversations with your connected contacts, voice and video calls, disappearing messages, attachments, and live location sharing inside a thread.
- What chat is for — Coordinating with the people already in your safety network.
- Message encryption — Direct messages are encrypted on your device with keys derived from your password.
- Disappearing messages — Set a timer per conversation; messages expire after they are read.
- Voice and video calls — Call a connected contact directly from the conversation.
- Sharing your live location in a conversation — A running share that updates roughly every 5 seconds until it expires.
- Public share links — A link that lets anyone follow you in a browser, for 1, 2, 5 or 24 hours.
- Attachments, voice notes and shared content — Photos, videos, files, voice messages, and content shared into SafX from other apps.
- Groups and polls — Group conversations with members, and polls for quick decisions.
- Limiting who can message you — Three modes: allow all, emergency only, or block all chat.
- Messaging with a poor connection — Messages queue on the device and send when the connection returns.
- Common problems and fixes — Missing conversations, undelivered messages and failed calls.
Frequently asked questions
Are SafX messages encrypted?
Yes. Direct messages are encrypted on the device using RSA-OAEP with AES-GCM, and your private key is itself encrypted with a key derived from your password using 250,000 PBKDF2 iterations. Secure chat requires a browser or device with Web Crypto support.
How do I share my live location with someone in SafX?
Either start a live location share inside a conversation, which updates about every 5 seconds for the people in that thread, or create a public share link that lasts 1, 2, 5 or 24 hours and works in any browser without a SafX account. Both can be stopped early.
How do I stop someone messaging me on SafX?
Set their chat policy to "Emergency only" so they can only reach you during an emergency, or "Block all chat" so they cannot message you at all. This does not change whether they receive your emergency alerts — that is controlled by the connection on the Network tab.
